English at Billing Brook school provides pupils with the toolkit to have a voice; in whatever way is appropriate to their individual needs. We ensure pupils are provided with meaningful and engaging experiences (encounter) to develop context for the learning ahead. Vocabulary and comprehension are fundamental to the ensuring pupils can communicate, gain independence, and develop resilience, so pupils will be taught strategies explicitly (explore); providing building blocks that support the underlying purpose of a unit. From this, as pupils develop understanding, they will demonstrate the knowledge and skills to apply this in a way that is appropriate to them; increasing independence throughout.
Reading at Billing Brook is a fundamental part of the curriculum; and we not only focus on the how to read, but also a love of reading.
